The competition for the title of top dog in from Petersen’s 4-Wheel & Off-Road magazine isn’t quite like that for ordinary automotive “best of” rankings—but that’s okay, because the publication’s highest honor, “4X4 of the Year,” didn’t go to an ordinary vehicle: It was bestowed on the 2012 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, the hardest of Jeep’s hardcore rock crawlers.
Now packing the Chrysler Group’s advanced Pentastar V6 mated to a rugged six-speed manual transmission, next-gen front and rear axles from Dana, and Jeep’s Command-Trac “shift-on-the-fly” four-wheel-drive system, the Wrangler Rubicon bested all rivals in the Petersen’s evaluations, which included a thousand miles of trail driving across some of the toughest terrain in the world.
“The 2012 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon is the most competent 4×4 ever produced,” said Rick Péwé, editor-in-chief of Petersen’s 4-Wheel & Off-Road. “The Rubicon gives you complete confidence in its terrain tackling abilities. It allows you to take the trail less traveled without worrying about the journey. And it does so while leaving a smile on your face. This is one fun ride.”
And the latest award comes hot on the wheels of two other recent honors for the Wrangler. It also was named “Mid-Size SUV of Texas” by the Texas Auto Writers Association and “Best Off-Road Value” in the 2012 Active Lifestyle Vehicle of the Year awards.
“No one puts a vehicle to the test more thoroughly than the editors of Petersen’s 4-Wheel & Off-Road, so Jeep is especially proud to win this prestigious award,” said Mike Manley, Jeep’s president and CEO. “Jeep Wrangler Rubicon has long been the most capable vehicle on the planet. With a completely new powertrain for 2012, it has reset the capability benchmark, while simultaneously offering consumers more fuel efficiency, horsepower, and on-road performance in every-day driving.”
